3D Model of Tunnels and Shafts of New Almaden Mine

3D Model of the Tunnels and Shafts with Terrain Map

The park had many miles of tunnels and shafts, all far out of sight below the surface. I have made a 3D view of the works in the Senador Mine previously, which was a lot of work. I laboriously digitized 2D maps from the literature and built it one tunnel layer at a time. Michael Cox made me aware of the work of Keith Russ and his website on abandoned mines. I was able to contact Dr. Russ and he kindly sent me a DXF file of the New Almaden mines that he made over a decade ago. I used Python to read the file and get it into an STL file to check out, all 47,000 3D faces of it. I made an elevation model of the terrain from a 1-meter LIDAR scan and overlayed a map and labels in glb format.
